Hitting Bottom — Finding Hope
By Barbara Nicholson-Brown
Hitting bottom was the best thing that ever happened to me. Exchanging my addictive behaviors for sobriety seemed unattainable. When I finally asked for help and admitted I had to change, by the grace of God, I was given an opportunity for a new beginning.
For years as an active alcoholic I lived with fear, despair, guilt and shame. Blaming others was my way of coping, because it was easier than facing the truth I was destroying myself. Many who struggle with addictions have this kind of skewed thinking— so we stay hiding in the darkness.
The African proverb: ‘It takes a village to raise a child,’ is a powerful message. Just as a child needs a supportive community to thrive— recovery flourishes with a village behind it. This means we must continue to raise awareness for resources, treatment options, and always offering the power of hope to anyone who needs help. We have a wealth of dedicated professionals at leading treatment centers and agencies, saving lives every day in Arizona. I’m honored to be a small part of this very large village.
