What Recovery Month Means to Me

For me, recovery month is more than a calendar event — and far more than words. It represents healing, hope, and resilience, all forged through patience, honesty, humility, and hard work.

When I first started on this journey, I didn’t know what recovery meant. How could I? I had no blueprint and no real understanding that addiction is a disease, not a personal flaw or a moral weakness, despite what I had been told while using. For years, I heard “What’s wrong with you?” and that settled deep into my identity.

Everything changed when those discouraging words were replaced by supportive ones: “We’re here for you,” “Take it one day at a time,” and “We are on this road together.” Hearing that, and finally believing it, lifted a massive weight off my shoulders.

Real life in recovery still has its ups, downs, laughter, and tears. But today, I know deep in my heart I am never alone. Recovery Month may only be recognized once a year, but I celebrate it all 365 days. Since 1989 September is recognized as National Recovery Month.

Suicide Prevention Month, an annual observance dedicated to sharing resources, promoting mental health awareness, and reducing the stigma surrounding suicide has been recognized since 2008.

A heartfelt thank you to our contributors for making this issue a memorable one.
